DESCRIPTION

The Churchill Heritage Conway Stewart Collection

This is the sixth pen in the second series of Conway Stewart Churchill Heritage pens, produced in association with Churchill Heritage — through which the Churchill family distributes funds to charities and good causes that keep alive the legacy of Sir Winston and the spirit of the words of wisdom he penned.

“Their Finest Hour”

Spoken to the House of Commons on 18 June 1940 — with the Battle of France lost and the Battle of Britain about to begin — these are among the most defiant and resolute words Sir Winston ever delivered. The speech braced a nation for the ordeal ahead and closed with the immortal line that gives this pen its name. Engraved on the barrel are the words “This was their finest hour.” Beneath this is Winston S Churchill’s signature, and under that the words “Made in Great Britain.”

The speech

“What General Weygand called the Battle of France is over. I expect that the Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilisation. Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, ‘This was their finest hour.’”

Finish & specification

This edition is presented in timeless Classic Black with gold appointments, for a refined and understated look. It is fitted with an 18ct gold nib. The wide 9ct gold cap band is struck with the British Hallmarks that certify it as genuine gold, and a leaflet explaining the history of British Hallmarks is included.

Also available in Burgundy, and as a Rollerball.

The book — Winston Churchill: Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat — The Great Speeches

A copy of this acclaimed anthology is supplied with every pen, gathering 33 of Churchill’s most famous speeches — from his maiden speech in the House of Commons in 1901 to his swan song of 1955, by way of his towering wartime rhetoric. As the Sunday Telegraph observed in its review, Churchill was a word-spinner of genius and the collection a splendid anthology.

The “Pug”

Engraved on the top of the cap of every Heritage pen is the iconic “Pug” that Winston sketched on a letter to his wife Clementine, dated 1st August 1909. Clementine called Winston “my sweet pug,” and he would often draw little animated pugs at the foot of his letters to her — this one, with the letter “W” above its head, bears a striking resemblance to the bulldog so often associated with the great man. A facsimile of the handwritten 1909 letter accompanies every pen.

Winston Churchill’s Red Cabinet Box

Each pen is presented in a replica of one of Winston Churchill’s red ministerial despatch boxes — the cases used by ministers of the British Government to carry official papers. The lid carries another of his famous lines: “I have always earned my living by my pen.” Inside, a foam insert holds the pen, a copy of Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat — The Great Speeches, a bottle of green ink, and a facsimile of Churchill’s 1909 letter to Clementine showing his own handwriting and his sketch of the “Pug.”

Limited Edition of 100 worldwide

Only 100 pens will be made of each quote in the series. Every pen carries a certificate detailing its edition number, which is also engraved on the end of the barrel.

Personal engraving

You can personalise your Churchill pen with initials, a name, a date or a phrase — engraved around the gold cap band or along the barrel.

Keeping the memory alive

A significant percentage of every pen sold goes to Churchill Heritage, helping to fund the events and education that keep the memory of Sir Winston — and his words — alive for generations to come.
